DIY Glowing Face Serum

A good serum (that doesn't cost an arm and a leg) is hard to find, so why not make one of your own?

I've been making my own face serums for well over a year now, and it has had a MAJOR impact on my skin! I used to have hormonal acne along my cheeks and jawline. It was to the point where my skin was inflamed and scarring from the breakouts. Needless to say, I was not enjoying it and attempted to cover it up with makeup-which only made matters worse.

Ever since I started using this serum at night, my skin has been less acne prone, the majority of my scarring has healed, and my skin overall looks much healthier! Over time, I've made a few tweaks to the recipe and truly believe it works wonders.

I'm a huge advocate for making my own skincare products because then I know EXACTLY what's going into the finished product. The problem with the majority of the beauty products out there are the sneaky chemicals and fragrances hidden behind long names that actually dry out your skin and cause irritation (whether you know it or not). This recipe is simple and effective, so let's get to it!

You will need:

  • Glass dropper to hold your serum in (I reused an oil dropper from a previous product).

  • 2 essential oils of choice. I tend to switch this part up, but currently I'm using frankincense and geranium.

  • Organic jojoba oil (I purchased mine on Amazon).

  • Dragon's Blood Oil (optional). This is a new addition to my recipe, but one with many benefits which I'll dive into later!

  • Label to finish it off.

Now let's get into WHY I chose these ingredients.

Organic Cold Pressed Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil not only moisturizes, it has anti-inflammatory properties (that means perfect for acne!), reduces redness, fights free radical damage-aka, helps with fine lines and wrinkles, and is filled with antioxidants such as vitamin A and K.

It also has a long shelf life and is super affordable! This big container of oil from Amazon has lasted me over a year. I use this not only for refilling my face serums, but as a base for my essential oils blends I make for myself and others as gifts. You can find it here.

Quality Essential Oils

As I've mentioned before, essential oils are PLANT medicine! I use mostly Rocky Mountain Oils, with some Young Living and Doterra oils mixed in.

As a go-to lately I've been utilizing geranium and frankincense oils in my recipe, as you can't go wrong. They both have antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, but frankincense is nicknamed the 'King of the Oils' for a reason. It is one of the best essential oils out there for fading scars and healing the skin. It is a potent natural agent for healthy skin stimulation, and it's known to encourage turnover and strengthen elasticity. So it's basically an anti-aging, acne-combating miracle.

Dragon's Blood

Dragon's blood?? It sounds strange, but it actually comes from the tap resin of tropical trees known as 'Dragon Trees'. It's bright red color is what gave it its name, dragon's blood. While dragon's blood can be used for many ailments, when it comes to skin, it's a powerhouse as well. Using it regularly will soothe, firm, and protect your skin from the environment. It reduces redness and is great for any sort of wound, like acne. Plus like jojoba oil, it's suitable for all skin types! I purchased mine here.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is a new addition to my recipe but I have noticed that when I use my face serum regularly at night, my skin is more glowing than ever!

Not only do all of these ingredients actually WORK to help my skin, I know at the end of the day I'm putting something on my body that is natural. I can pronounce all of the ingredients and feel good about saving money by making my own serum and refilling it as needed. Your skin is your body's largest organ, what goes on it matters!
